Meath players opt out of senior football panel
Several Meath footballers, it is understood, have left the panel ahead of the preparations for the Leinster SFC opener against Longford on Sunday 27th May.
The players had returned to their clubs to prepare for club championships after Meath's survival in NFL Div 2 was confirmed with the win over Louth in Drogheda on Saturday 31st March.
They were then called back to inter-county duty on the Monday evening after the first round of the club championship games.
However, it is understood that Simonstown's Sean Tobin did not return to the panel following the club championship game against Dunshaughlin at Pairc Tailteann on the Sunday where he scored three points.
Another Simonstown player, Brian Conlon, has apparently left the squad following discussions with the management.
Skryne midfielder Harry Rooney is also believed to have departed while Curraha's David Toner and Summerhill's Barry Dardis are no longer involved.
The players will be with their clubs this week ahead of the second round of the SFC, IFC and JFC.
Efforts by the Meath Chronicle to contact anyone involved with the management of the county team proved unsuccessful.
However, Meath Co Board PRO Ciaran Flynn issued a statement and in that he confirmed that there would be changes to the panel ahead of the start of the Leinster SFC.
“All the players are back with their clubs at the moment and the championship panel will be finalised at the end of the month as happens at the end of each National League campaign,” he stated.
“Of course, there will be some players leaving the panel, but there will be a few new faces joining as well,” added the PRO.
