Ref justice in Euro shoot-out!

Jimmy who? Jimmy Corcoran. Jimmy Corcoran from Drumbaragh near Kells in Co Meath.

Almost everyone in the country will have heard the name Jimmy Corcoran after tonight's sensational UEFA u-17 Championship penalty shoot-out as the Republic of Ireland exited the competition in hugely controversial circumstances in Chesterfield.

The Meath teenager, who will be eligible for the u-17 grade again next year (2019) when the tournament is hosted in Ireland, wasn't even the first choice goalkeeper when the tournament began last week.

He stepped up to the plate and deputised for the injured first choice 'keeper with some sterling performances as the Irish lads booked a big-game showdown with the Dutch (Netherlands) in tonight's last quarter-final with the prize of a place in the last four against England.

Jimmy saved the 5th penalty to tie it at 4-4 after the sides finished level (1-1) after 80 minutes.

However, the referee adjudged that Jimmy had moved off the goal line (not allowed) and ordered a re-take - AND gave Jimmy a yellow card (his second of the game). He got the first for allegedly delaying time at a free midway through the second-half - it was a harsh card.

Jimmy was duly red-carded and an outfield player had to go betweren the posts for the re-take which the Dutch scored.

Republic of Ireland senior manager Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane were both at the game and O'Neill made his way pitchside after the final penalty towards the referee.

Corcoran was part of the Republic of Ireland u-16s  team that won the Victory Shield for the second year in a row, after defeating Scotland 2-0 in Bangor at the end October last year.

He began playing under-age for Kells / Blackwater in the NECSL before moving to Cherry Orchard and he recently agreed terms with Preston North End and will join them in July.
