Clancy plots FAI Cup shock as Drogheda advance

Trim man Timmy Clancy masterminded the shock of the opening round of the FAI Cup last night when his Drogheda Utd sent Shamrock Rovers tumbling out of the competition at United Park.

Drogheda took the lead from a first-half penalty converted by Chris Lyons, but it also earned a red card for Lee Grace that left the Dublin side with 10 men for the remainder.

Shamrock Rovers brought excellent form into the game having lost just once in their last 11 league outings, but the record FAI Cup holders last lifted the trophy back in 1987.

Drogheda were without the suspended Sean Brennan, but will now go into the draw on Monday for the next round.

Drogheda will travel to Cabinteely for a vital League game next weekend as they bid to stay in the play-off position with four games remaining in the First Division.

Dundalk also progressed to the next round when they negotiated Cobh Ramblers at Oriel Park by 3-0.

It was another clean sheet for Bohermeen man Gary Rogers while Athboy's Jamie McGrath was on the mark with a fine goal.

Dundalk travel to Bray next weekend for a League game - they are two points behind leaders Cork City with games in hand against Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers.

The first round of the FAI Cup continues this evening and tomorrow.
