Last-gasp McGoldrick point seals win for Skryne
David McGoldrick popped over an injury time point to secure a dramatic 1-13 to 0-15 SFC victory over Gaeil Colmcille at Pairc Tailteann today.
The signs were ominous at the break for Skryne. At that stage they trailed by 'only' two point, 0-5 to 0-7 but they could and should have been behind by much more as Gaeil Colmcille missed a host of chances.
However Skryne came out a much better team for the second-half and within a minute of the resumption they scored a goal when Conor O'Brien fired to the net from close range.
With 12 minutes to go Gaeil Colmcille were still looking good as they led by three but Skryne kept chipping away and two pointed frees from Paddy O'Rourke and one from Jason Reddy drew the sides level before McGoldrick stepped forward to grab the winner.
Seamus Mattimoe fired over seven points for Gaeil Colmcille over the hour while Brian Hanlon made a hefty contribution with three. The hard work put in by Lar Wall's side looked like it might be enough to secure victory however Skryne had other ideas and with the help of McGoldrick's late heroics they made it across the line amid a welter of excitement.
The result leaves Skryne on the top of Group B in the SFC and all be a assured of a place in the quarter-finals.
In the curtain-raiser at Pairc Tailteann today Longwood secured a comfortable 1-19 to 0-7 over Meath Hill with Aaron Ennis scoring an outstanding goal for Longwood. It was 0-11 to 0-2 at the interval.
