The McAdam Family ‘Muintearas ’ Lunchtime Concert

A series of hour-long lunchtime concerts, a celebration of traditional music and its transmission within families featuring some well-known musical families from the Oriel Region. Today’s concert features the McAdam Family from Ballybay, Co. Monaghan.

Explore the sonic collaborations of composer Michael Holohan (Aosdána) and the acclaimed uileann piper Mick O’Brien. The major work of the evening will be ‘The Road to Lough Swilly’ for uilleann pipes and string orchestra. O’Brien will also perform ‘An Fear as Fingal’, written to commemorate the great Seamus Ennis who spent his final years closeby in the Naul, Co. Dublin. The stellar line-up of performers includes The RTÉ Contempo Quartet, Mick O’Brien and family, The Boyne Chamber Orchestra and Michael Holohan.

A concert that will surely lift the roof off the Fleadh Dome. BEOGA, Irish for ‘lively’, have produced five critically acclaimed albums and been shortlisted for a Grammy, but their recent collaboration with Ed Sheeran has brought them to another level and a new audience. Join Gradam Ceoil Award ‘Traditional Musician of the Year 2018’, Frankie Gavin and his Roaring Twenties Irish Orchestra who will revive that extraordinary era once again; the main quartet are Martin Murray (banjo), Frankie Gavin (fiddle), Emma Corbett (melodeon) & Carl Hession (piano).

This strikingly unique venue can only heighten the immense piping talent of Padraig McGovern and multi-instrumentalist Dave Sheridan. Dave and Padraig have been performing together from a very young age. Recently they have been collaborating with Eleanor Shanley and John McCartin in the Leitrim Equation 4 programme and the band ‘Garadice’.

A social enterprise which provides accessible training and employment opportunities to individuals who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, homelessness to become walking tour guides of ‘their’ streets. Enjoy our hour-long walking tour along the high-ways and the by-ways of Drogheda, offering kaleidoscopic, colourful insights into this historic town.

SEAN O’LAOIRE MID – MORNING SESSIONS

Join uileann piper Darragh Ó Héiligh and friends for a session of informal music, song and dance. A monthly initiative, developed in response to the forthcoming hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, has enjoyed a warm reception, inspiring and engaging the citizens of the region to observe and appreciate, enjoy and participate at one Drogheda’s most iconic monuments.

TREASURES OF THE BOYNE VALLEY: CULTURE TOURS

These special tours offer the Fleadh visitor an expanded experience of the heritage and culture, art, archaeology and nature of Drogheda, and the Boyne Valley, the birthplace of Ireland’s Ancient East. To coincide with Drogheda’s hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann there is a special element focusing on Irish traditional music, song and dance. There will be refreshments served as part of each tour.

SONGTRAIL

Stories of traditional song, songwriters, keepers and collectors. Songtrail celebrates the diverse culture of traditional music making in Drogheda through a walking trail experience for local and visiting audiences. An aural blending of documentary, musical recordings, biographical material, and anecdote created in the community using local knowledge, archives, musicians and singers. Designed and Compiled by Declan Mallon, Upstate Theatre Project.
RITA DUFFY: STRENGTH AND GLORY

A contemporary art project examining the received gestures, symbols and props of Irish life. Drawing on artistic legacy such as that of Andy Warhol who encouraged looking again at the familiar and the mass produced as a political act, senior Iirish artist (Aosdána), Rita Duffy presents ‘multiple produce’ in an exploration of the Irish lived experience. Historical, political and social events are reworked and presented to the viewer as irreverent thought – provoking everyday commodities – tins and jars are released from the larder to question our cultural divisions and values. All is approached and presented to reaffirm and examine the commonality of our essential human needs.
 
MILLMOUNT CULTURAL QUARTER

High on the hill with spectacular views of the Boyne and the town is Drogheda Museum & Martello Tower. Visit an exhibition on traditional Irish music from the greater Drogheda & North-East area, choose from the mythological & historical tours, and in the evenings experience ‘living history’ presentations. Millmount Cultural Quarter is also home to a number of craft studios, with artists and makers, from silversmiths and knitwear designers, to quilters and an exquisite painted silk practitioner. Makers will open their studios, offering courtyard demonstrations and a daily aonach ceardaíochta.
