Two finals on the same day - both won
Last Saturday was a special day for three youngsters who notched up the unique achievement by winning finals in soccer and hurling - all inside a few hours.
Oisin McDermott, Hughie Corcoran and Kit Og Lynch turned out for Kells/Blackwater in the NECSL u-15 Premier Shield final at the MDL at midday and played significiant roles in ensuring their team won the silverware.
The game finished 0-0 after extra-time and went to a penalty shoot-out. It was then that goalkeeper McDermott came to the fore making two excellent saves for Kells/Blackwater.
Lynch also stepped into the limelight when he held his nerve to find the net with what turned out to be the last kick of the shoot-out to ensure Kells/Blackwater were victorious.
Lynch hit his shot with power and accuracy, the ball firmly directed to the bottom left corner of the net.
Time for the intrepid threesome to relax and celebrate their great win? Not a bit of it.
Soon after the final whistle sounded the three players had to turn their minds to the next assignment - an u-15 hurling final with Kilskyre/Gaeil Colmcille.
They were fixed to play Wolfe Tones in the final at Dunganny at 2pm so there was no time for McDermott, Corcoran, and Lynch to wait in getting from the MDL to the Meath GAA Centre of Excellence.
To save time they changed on the way from their soccer gear into their hurling outfits. They arrived at Dunganny just before throw-in.
Since they didn't need to warm up they were well ready for battle as they swapped into their black and amber jerseys.
Showing little signs of fatigue they donned their helmets and took to the field of play.
Not only that, they played their parts in ensuring the Kilskryre/Gaeil Colmcille selection won the game 2-9 to 3-5 to complete an astonishing afternoon of sporting action.
Three players, two finals, two victories. What a day to remember for the three bravehearts.
