Pedestrians reminded to walk on right-hand side of road facing oncoming traffic
Meath County Council has issued a warning for pedestrians and walkers to take extra care walking on local roads.
To date in 2018, forty pedestrians have lost their lives on Irish roads, which is an increase of ten on the total figure for 2017. Sadly, one of those fatalities was in County Meath.
The large number of people who are walking on the wrong side of the road is of concern, and Meath County Council’s Roads Safety Officer, Michael Finnegan, has advised that, where no footpath has been provided, people should make sure to walk on the right hand side of the road facing oncoming traffic. Walking on the right hand side of the road gives drivers a much greater chance of seeing pedestrians.
Wearing dark clothing also makes it very difficult for drivers to see a pedestrian, so it is important that pedestrians wear some item of Hi-visibility material when walking during hours of darkness.
