Jolly hockey sticks as Navan kicks off new year in perfect fashion
The Navan women's hockey team kicked off 2019 in impressive fashion when they defeated Tullamore 5-0 in a league clash at St Joseph's Mercy Secondary School , Navan today with Bronagh Markey helping herself to a hat-trick.
Currently struggling near the foot of the table Navan badly needed a victory in this contest and they were well on the way to achieving just that at half-time when they led 2-0 with Markey firing home two goals.
The first arrived on 22 minutes and the second just before the interval with the ball taking a wicked deflection before ending up in the Tuallamore goals.
Louise Byrne and Mairead Canavan also found the target for Ruth Fitzgerald's side before Markey struck to complete her hat-trick with almost the last strike of the ball.
This was an encouraging team display by a hard working Navan side but Fitzgerald and her troops will know they have a far tougher challenges ahead as they seek to move away from the lower end of the table.
