New town bus services for Navan welcomed
ANN CASEY
Two new vehicles for the Navan town bus route will come into service later this year.
Bus Éireann plans to do driver training and route assessments before the new midi buses come into service.
The news received a warm welcome in Navan, with local representatives urging Bus Éireann to now extend the service routes in the town..
“I welcome the news that new Bus Éireann services are to be delivered in County Meath. The National Transport Authority (NTA) confirmed that they want to put these services in place as soon as possible," said Deputy Peadar Tóibín.
“There are a number of outstanding issues which first need to be ironed out between Meath County Council and the NTA – namely that of the placement of new bus stops."
Deputy Tóibín said that there was concern about commuter bus services from Navan. "We have had numerous meetings with Bus Éireann over the last few years, but there is still a crisis in dropped bus services and late bus services between towns in Meath and Dublin city.
“There is also much work to be done on the development of services between smaller towns and villages in the county”.
Cllr Forde Wayne Forde welcomed the news of the new buses, recalling that he had spent 15 months negotiating with Bus Éireann.
"This is fantastic news for all the service users of the local Navan Town bus service. I am thrilled for my constituents that use the daily local bus service Monday to Friday".
Cllr Forde is also seeking that the local bus service run a half day on a Saturday and Sunday so people can come into town and visit relatives and friends.
A spokesperson for Bus Éireann said new vehicles for the Navan town service have been ordered and are due for delivery in the second quarter of the year.
