Bus Eireann coach gets stuck on Navan roundabout
A Bus Eireann coach which got stuck on the Solstice Roundabout in Navan last night has led to calls for a health and safety report to be carried out at the junction.
The bus got stuck on the roundabout in rush hour traffic causing traffic tailbacks around the town.
Cllr Wayne Forde has described the roundabout as an accident waiting to happen. "It is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs at the Solstice Roundabout on Railway Street."
"It is one of the most dangerous roundabouts that I have ever seen. There have been many incidents of vehicles going into the flowerbed with traffic also colliding with side road kerbs, as well."
"Thank God nobody was injured. I would like to commend An Garda Siochana at the scene for doing a wonderful job keeping the scene safe, while emergency workers tried to remove the bus from the scene. I am writing to Meath County Council today to carry out a health and safety report without delay."
A Navan-based engineer who contacted the Meath Chronicle suggested that the roundabout should be made more visible. The engineer, who wished to remain anonymous suggested illuminating the inner 'disc' of the roundabout would be of huge benefit to bus and HGV drivers who are having to negotiate it, sometimes in poor visibility.
The bus took three and half hours to remove from the scene with jacks carefully deployed to lift the double decker and ensure no damage was caused to sump and undercarriage of the vehicle.
