Dunsany to honour retiring postmaster
Dunsany and surrounds will pay tribute to its just-retired post master, Malachy Lynch, at a gathering in Dunsany GAA clubhouse tonight (Friday).
Malachy last week retired as post master after almost 20 years as postmaster in the community, and closed the doors of the post office there for the last time on Saturday afternoon.
He took over the running of the local service in 2000, following the retirement of Joan Collier at Dunsany Crossroads.
It marks the end of a post office service which has existed for centuries in Dunsany, since the Hands and Harringtons operated at Dunsany Cross.
The Dunsany Post Office district over the years has included Dunsany, Killeen, Tara, Kiltale, Galtrim and Kilmessan, and all who were served by the post office and who used it over the years are invited to Dunsany on Friday night, from 8.30pm.
On Saturday afternoon, members of the Skryne community gathered with Mary O'Growney as she closed the door on Tara Post Office for the last time.
On Friday, children from Skryne National School walked from the school to the post office to post their final letters there.
The pupils wrote time capsule letters to their future selves. They have written about what they think their lives and the world will be like in 10 years time, and won’t open their letters until 25th January 2029.
A Mass of Thanksgiving for Mary's years of service is planned for Friday 1st March in Skryne, with a presentation to her afterwards in the neighbouring hall. Invitation letters are being sent out in the coming weeks.
Dunsany and Tara were the last two Meath post offices to close in the current round of rationalisation by An Post. The post boxes at both places will remain in use.
