VIDEO: Dramatic rescue of deer trapped in the River Boyne

A deer had a narrow escape this afternoon in Navan when it became trapped in the icy waters of the River Boyne earlier today (Wednesday). 

The animal, which appeared to have a facial injury, was spotted floating under the bridge at the junction of the Navan and Kentstown roads before coming to rest under trees close to where the Boyne meets the Blackwater.

Emergency services contacted by concerned onlookers were unable to deal with the incident but thankfully, Meath River Rescue wasted no time in responding and deployed a rib with MRR personnel Jamie and Shane Rennicks, and Jenny Smith on board. 

The crew tried to cajole the animal up onto nearby banks but the creature was feeling the effects of being trapped in the water for over 30 minutes and struggled to climb to safety.

Eventually, after several attempts, the determined crew managed to get the deer, moving again and up onto a nearby bank but, disorientated and frightened, it entered the water again.

 

Finally, it made its way back up river close to Andy Brennan Park where managed to mount the bank and it disappeared into the woodland close to Convent Road
