Dunboyne's McCarthy points the way to victory
Robbie McCarthy underlined his value to Dunboyne when he hit 1-9 as the reigning champions started the defence of their title with a 1-16 to 0-14 victory over Curraha at Ratoath this evening.
Ciaron Byrne's side led from start to finish but they certainly didn't have it all their own way against a spirited Curraha side who only fell away near the end.
Dunboyne led 1-7 to 0-8 at the interval with McCarthy's goal cleverly taken after just nine minutes when he got to the end of a Niall Jones centre and flicked the ball to the net with his fist.
David Toner pointed in the opening minute of the second-half to leave just a point between the sides but that was as close as Curragh got to the champions.
Youngster Jack O'Connor was outstanding for Curraha clocking up nine point, seven frees, in a huge display from him. James McEntee was another player who caused Dunboyne lots of problems. In the closing seconds McEntee watched as he unleashed a shot with the ball hitting the bar and over for a point.
Fast and assured Dunboyne sent out a signal that they will not be not be knocked off their perch too easily this year.
