Grand welcome for Tiger Roll as legend brings Summerhill to a standstill

Summerhill came to standstill yesterday as dual Grand National Winner Tiger Roll came home to a hero's welcome.

Gordon Elliott was far more composed leading the brilliant 9yo into his homeplace than he was at Aintree on Saturday and the emotion he showed after training the first horse since the great Red Rum in 1973/74 to win back-to-back renewals of the world's most famous steeplechase. The trainer with 50 Grade 1 winners now was swamped by friends and supporters all looking for a prized picture with the three-time Grand National winning training trainer and the trophy.

Team Elliott was joined on the parade route by Gigginstown Stud boss, Michael O'Leary, winning jockey Davy Russell and their families. O'Leary led the crowds in cheering in the champion into a special winner's enclosure outside Shaw's pub. 

Meath trainer Noel Meade was just one of the wellwishers in the crowd and decribed Elliott's fear as "remarkable" and said it was hardly surprising Ellliott was so emotional given the feat he had just achieved.

Elliott - a native of Summerhill, who was winning his third National having struck Aintree gold with Silver Birch in 2007 - said: "To come back here and see the crowds, it's unbelievable, it's great.

"You get emotional, it's the biggest race in the world. Everyone will remember Tiger Roll winning two in a row.

"We're all proud Summerhill men. My uncle passed away this year, he used to take me point-to-pointing and the race was for him.

"It was a great day, brilliant. To come here (and celebrate) two years in a row is great - this is a great community, everyone gets on well, so it's great to see a big crowd here.
