Wolfe Tones stun the champions

It's a dangerous game writing off Wolfe Tones and tonight at Skryne they proved just why that is so as they humbled champions Dunboyne in the second round of the SFC and emerged with a fully deserved 0-13 to 0-11 victory.
There were a couple of times in this game when Wolfe Tones could have been forgiven for letting their heads drop in the face of adversity, but every time they were asked a serious question they came up with a positive answer as eight points from sharp shooter Cian Ward inspired them to victory
The sides shared the opening six points, but by the end of the first quarter Wolfe Tones led by 0-5 to 0-3. However like true champions Dunboyne upped the tempo and in a blistering 10 minute spell they added five points to open up a three-point gap.
Facing that tough test of character Wolfe Tones responded positively with three successive points to draw level, but again Dunboyne settled and ensured a 0-10 to 0-8 interval lead.
The secpnd-half was slow to get going as Wolfe Tones established a brilliant defensive structure.
Two more frees from Ward had them level by the 43rd minute and by the end of the third quarter they were narrowly ahead, 0-11 to 0-10.
Dunboyne had completely lost their way as they added wide after wide. Wolfe Tones also started to wander with their noses in front, but they eventually opened up a three-point gap with three minutes remaining.
Dunboyne's only score of the half came in the 58th minute from a Robbie McCarthy free, his eighth score of the game, but there was no way back as Wolfe Tones held on to prove there is still plenty of life in their SFC ambitions.
