Shock reaction to Rathbeggan Lakes closure
News that one of Meath's most popular family and tourist attractions is set to close for good as a result of spiralling insurance premiums has sent shockwaves across the county and beyond. Rathbeggan Lakes, close to Dunshaughlin, offers lake fishing, children's activities such as zip lines, pedal boating and bouncy castles over its 22-acre site and each year welcomes thousands of families for picnics, barbeques and fun days out.
Proprietor Dave Robinson (59), has operated the site since 1998 and has decided this season will be the last for Rathbeggan Lakes in its current guise. He says the business model is broken for this type of enterprise and has warned that other businesses offering leisure activities for kids and families in the Boyne Valley region and beyond are facing the same threat.
“In the heel of the hunt we managed to get our insurance together for this year, but it was a policy that doesn’t cover everything I’d like it to cover but it’s all I can afford and it’s up near €40,000 for everything. It’s just outrageous, says Dave, adding,
“It was an incredibly difficult decision to come to but once it was made, the weight was lifted off my shoulders. Looking at what is now the last 16-17 weeks of the business, I can say I won't have to worry about this anymore and that is a huge relief."
As the news circulated that the much-loved family activity destination is due to close at the end of the season, many patrons voiced their shock and disappointment on social media with one local commenting that the loss will be felt not just in Meath but throughout the country.
"What a loss to the locality and economy, Dave brought this business from strength to strength, only to be crippled by massive insurance hikes just like numerous family attractions we have lost in Meath this year. I always thought it would make a great campsite to take on the likes of hidden valley."
Another Facebook user describes many happy family days out at Rathbeggan,
"Such a shame. My family just loves the place. I would take my granddaughters over to the lakes to feed the ducks and there was always something going on. Lot's of happy families like mine are going to be saddened by this news. Dave ran a great place and it's a testimony of these comments that his operation will be a great loss to the families of Co. Meath among others."
Others were angry at the claims culture that has seen many similar businesses close their doors in recent months.
"It's what happens when people scam the system with false claims. It drives up Insurances and forces people to close the doors. The sooner Courts throws claims out for minor injuries the better. Some courts are settling claims from €10k to €30 k and it's people like Dave who works hard and suffers the consequences."
It seems that Rathbeggan Lakes' legacy will be the many lasting memories made by families, schools and activity lovers throughout the years.
"The closing of Rathbeggan Lakes will be a MAJOR loss to the community, county, province and country. Not only did Dave & his team facilitate family fun days out, but also, educational school tours, tranquil lake fishing, air-soft leagues, garden allotments and accommodation. Thanks for everything Dave and co who have helped so many people make great memories at Rathbeggan Lakes."
