Derry awaits for Royals after win in Roscommon

While they struggled at times to exert their authority Meath defeated Roscommon 0-23 to 0-19 in the Christy Ring Cup at Athleague today to set up a clash with Derry in the semi-finals next weekend.

The lack of goal-scoring opportunities was one of the concerns that preoccupied Nick Fitzgerald after he watchd his side overcome the Connacht side who fought to the bitter end. 

The win ensured Meath will now be playing Derry who were second in their group at a neutral venue. While there was no official confirmation of a venue at the time of writing it is possible it could be played at Clones or Breffni Park. 

After comfortable wins over London and Kildare, Meath had to work hard to overcome Roscommon with the Royals marksman Jack Regan once more to the fore with 13 points, nine frees. 

At the break Meath led 0-10 to 0-9 but Roscommon equalised on the resumption before Meath pushed ahead where they stayed. 

Apart from brief spells Meath led all the way but at no stage could they get more than five points in front of their gritty opponents.  James Toher came on for a short spell but he had to go off injured again and that was a blow to the player who was hoping to lay down a marker in this game.  

Barry Slevin capped a powerful display with five points from play while the outstanding Damien Healy contributed two with Callum O'Sullivan, Nicky Potterton and Cathal McCabe others to contribute for the visitors. Goalkeeper Barry Slevin also played his part with two outstanding saves. Cathal Dolan was Roscommon's main marksman with seven points. 

Plenty of work for Meath to do ahead of the Derry game.
