Mothers to take over Navan O'Mahonys on Saturday
Girl power will be evident at the Navan O’Mahonys clubhouse and playing pitches on Saturday morning of this week when the club hosts the prestigious Leinster Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others one-day blitz.
The eagerly-awaited warm up is scheduled for aronf midday and the action will continue until around 4pm.
Navan O’Mahonys Well Being Officer Eunice Murtagh set up the club’s inaugural Gaelic for Mothers & Others team in May 2016 and the initiative has proved popular and successful.
The idea behind it was to offer an opportunity to the many mothers who would regularly drop their children at training and then stand on the sidelines and wait until it was over.
“These women are an integral part of the GAA community, but were more or less ignored,” stated Murtagh.
“The reaction to the initiative was positive and the Gaelic4Mothers&Others provides the opportunity to play
Gaelic football in a fun, non-competitive and social environment,” she added.
An added bonus is that it also provides an opportunity for women to get their recommended weekly exercise in a fun way and is also a way of meeting other mothers in the area.
The popularity of the scheme increased and now the women can train every Tuesday night.
“At this stage we have over 50 members of various football abilities, but the ethos is always that everyone has fun,” added the Navan O’Mahonys official.
“Over the last three years we have attended the LGFA Leinster and All Ireland Blitz days, which were always fun, enjoyable days.
“This year however we are very lucky as our club gets the opportunity to host one of the two Leinster Blitz days and the action will take place this Saturday 20th of July,” she concluded.
Any ladies who are interested in getting involved in the training are welcome to attend on Saturday where they will find out more information.
SATURDAY 20th JULY FROM MIDDAY
Navan O’Mahonys Mothers & Others will host 36 teams and up to 550 women from across Leinster at Paddy O’Brien Park for the G4M&O Blitz.
