Supporters have a role to play on Saturday
Meath GAA supporters will have an opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the senior football players in the final game of the year for the Royal County at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening, 6pm.
Unusually, that is the only certainty for Meath from Saturday's scheduled All-Ireland SFC Super 8s third round tie against under-pressure Kerry.
Win or lose, this will be Meath's last game of the year and in that regard the loyal Meath supporters must surely avail of the chance to attend a high-profile All-Ireland quarter-final tie in what could very well be the last such fixture in the soon-to-be-redeveloped Pairc Tailteann.
Even without that incentive, the lure of David tackling Goliath on home turf should be enough to whet the appetites of even the most lukewarm Meath supporters.
Turn Tailteann into a sea of Meath green and gold in front of the Sky cameras and roar the team on to what would be a major upset if they were to topple title-chasing Kerry.
Once the final whistle sounds on Saturday evening the players will have to quickly turn their attention to the following weekend and a resumption of the second phase of the club football championships.
Not much rest for the players on the county panel, but that's an issue that is no way connected with Saturday's eagerly-awaited visit of Munster champions Kerry to Pairc Tailteann for what is a must-win game for them.
Kerry will approach this game with a certain amount of caution, but they have to be confident that they can negotiate anything Meath can muster.
Defeat will not automatically eliminate Kerry, but if that was the outcome, then manager Peter Keane and his selectors would be looking for a Donegal victory in Castlebar to sustain their own title ambitions.
Against that backdrop, Andy McEntee's Meath can expect another stern examination of their credentials and a flavour of what they will face on next year when they set out on their NFL Div 1 campaign.
The other group action will unfold at McHale Park, Castlebar when Mayo welcome Donegal to the Connacht venue for that is, without doubt, the highlight of the weekend.
