Navan teenager dies following Lanzarote fall
The Navan teenager who was critically injured in a fall in Lanzarote on Monday has died, the hospital in Las Palmas has stated.
Friends of 15 year-old Mikey Leddy have been paying tribute to him on social media. They had been supporting him online since the incident yesterday.
Mikey was a popular member of Navan O'Mahonys at underage level and had travelled to Feile, and also played soccer as part of the Kennedy Cup NECSL squad in the past.
One of a family of four, he was on holiday with his parents, Aisling and Damien, and is believed to have suffered a serious head injury after falling from a wall early on Monday morning in Puerto del Carmen.
Emergency services were called to Avenida de las Playas in the resort of Puerto del Carmen early yesterday morning where they found the youth with a serious head injury after falling from the top of a wall. He was brought to the Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Las Palmas.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance.
Tributes poured in for the teenager last night with his club, Navan O'Mahony's among the first to express their shock and sadness.
"Navan O'Mahony's wish to express our profound sadness and shock at the tragic passing of Mikey Leddy. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Leddy family and Mikey's many friends and teammates."
St Colmcilles added: "Thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Cilles are with the Leddy and @NavanOMahonys
families tonight. Mikey graced Piltown and Seafield on numerous occasions and was a credit to his family and club. So so sad. Ar dheis go raibh a ainim."
Tributes were also paid by soccer club Johnstown FC who tweeted: "It is with great sadness our own Mikey Leddy has passed away this afternoon, the tragic event that has happened in the last 48 hours has shocked us all. We would ask that everyone remembers Mikey for the champion he was and his fighting spirit. RIP MIKEY LEDDY."
