Compánach is a unique, fast-moving, cross-media concert of Irish traditional music, song and dance, and using photography and historic pictures to tell the music’s story from past to present. It brings together tunes from all counties of Ireland, and is performed by Dundalk fiddler Gerry O’Connor, Monaghan uilleann piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchínn, Armagh flute-player Fintan Vallely, Dublin sean-nós step dancer Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáin, and Dublin sean-nós singer Róisín Chambers, with the additional narrative power of superb, big-screen images.  Its theme is music and place and has been developed and directed by Fintan Vallely, expanding from Compánach, the encyclopaedia Companion to Irish Traditional Music of which he is editor.

Nic Gareiss: The Art of Treepling

4:00pm  |  Droichead Arts Centre  |  Tickets: €16

Named by Dance Magazine as one of 2019's ‘25 to Watch’ dancer and dance researcher Nic Gareiss has been hailed by the New York Times for his "dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance" and called "the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. He reimagines movement as a musical practice, recasting dance as medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Originally from Michigan, Gareiss draws from many percussive dance traditions, weaving together a dance technique facilitating his love of improvisation, traditional footwork vocabulary, and musical collaboration.

Dermot Byrne, Éamonn Coyne, John Doyle

8.00pm  |  Droichead Arts Centre  |  Tickets: €20
Three figures synonymous with Irish music today, Dermot Byrne, Éamonn Coyne and John Doyle first played together in a pub session at the Carrick Fleadh, in South West Donegal in the late 1980s. Three decades and countless thousands of miles later, they have recently completed an album called Liag, of lesser known traditional music and song from or inspired  by the area, affirming just how their meeting there has been a cornerstone of each of their disparate journeys and musical careers with bands such as Altan, Salsa Celtica and Solas. An evening of musical richness, layering, creative reflection and ingenuity.

Ceol Le Clapsolas: Sárán Mulligan & John McCann

10:00pm  |  Highlanes Gallery  |  Tickets: €16
Join current All-Ireland winners and two of the finest emerging musical talents of this region for some sensational music in the gloaming.
Sárán Mulligan is a concertina player and composer from Dundalk, Co. Louth. Steeped in a musical tradition, Sárán has earned acclaim as one of Ireland’s leading young traditional musicians. He is the current senior All-Ireland Concertina champion, and has previously won in the 15-18 and 12-15 age levels as well as being an All-Ireland champion in duet and trio competitions. His compositions have earned him awards at All-Ireland status also, having taken 2nd place in the newly composed tunes in 2017.
John McCann hails from Coa Co. Fermanagh, a town steeped in Irish traditional music. John’s music is characterised by a lively but subtle rhythmic beat as well as an appreciation for harmony and phrasing. He is heavily influenced by the playing of Danny O Mahony and Finbar Dwyer.  John was crowned the Senior All Ireland Button Accordion Champion at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018, here in Drogheda, having won the same competition in the 15-18 age level in 2016. All roads lead to the Fleadh Concert Dome in St Dominic’s Park once again, for a furious night of powerful ceol and savage competition as the bands battle it out for ultimate All-Ireland glory. Since the days when The Tulla and The Kilfenora waged musical war against each other, where more recently The Shandrum conquered thrice, & with the 2018 new title-holders the Blackwater Céilí Band, this competition has cast a spell over Fleadh Cheoil na hEÌireann. The creative energy of every fleadh expresses itself this thrilling night in an epic competition of collective trad talent which never ceases to excite and invigorate.
