Toner 'gutted' to be left out of squad
Devin Toner has said he was "gutted" to be left out of the Irish squad for the forthcoming World Cup in Japan.
In what was his first public response to the shock decision by Irish coach Joe Schmidt that the big Moynalvey man would not be in the Irish squad for the World Cup which starts in a few weeks time.
"Obviously gutted not to be on the plane, thanks to everyone for their kind messages. Best of luck to all the lads involved," was Toner's response to the news that came right out of left field.
Toner has been one of Schmidt's go-to players on the Irish team however with the arrival of South African Jean Kleyn he how now found himself out in the cold.
Toner came on as a substitute in recent 57-15 loss to England but an ankle injury towards the end of last season may well be one of the main reasons for the Meath player's omission however he didn't indicate that in his tweet.
Toner has enjoyned tremendous success with Ireland winning Grands Slams and Six Nations' Championship titles but at 33 his international career may be over. Only time will tell if that proves to be the case.
Ireland start their World Cup campaign with a game against Scotland on Sunday 22nd September.
