O'Halloran steps down as Co Board chairman
In a shock move tonight Meath GAA Co Board chairman Peter O'Halloran has stepped down from his position with immediate effect.
Citing an error of judgement over two years ago in communications with a local referee O'Halloran admitted he made a 'bad call' that was 'never acted upon' in a statement that was released to the 59 clubs in Meath
The Drumconrath clubman was elected to the position of Meath GAA Co Board chairman for the first time in December 2017 when he defeated the only other candidate for the role, Eamonn Barry by 111 votes to 70.
In his statement O'Halloran thanks all those who helped him over his two decades serving Meath GAA and revealed that he would be making no further comment.
Meath Co Board will discuss the matter further at a scheduled executive meeting next Monday night.
O'Halloran's statement in full reads.
"Throughout my twenty-year involvement with Meath GAA (through Juvenile, Minor and Adult Boards), I have always worked for what was best for GAA in this great County.
With the support of many great Gaels, we feel we have made strides to steer Meath back to what the GAA people in this county and the GAA public in general know and feel where Meath should stand.
Some of you will be aware that I made an error of judgement some two and a half years ago, before I was Chairman, in a communication with a referee.
It was a bad call on my behalf that was carried out in the heat of the moment, but was never acted upon, and is an incident that I deeply regret.
In the interests of Meath GAA, and with a very heavy heart, I have tonight taken the decision to step down, with immediate effect, as Cathlaoirleach of Coiste na Mi.
I would like to thank all those in Meath GAA who have helped me over the past two decades, and I would urge all to row in behind Coiste na Mi to ensure the upward trend in this County continues.
I ask that all work together to ensure the steps taken so far will help lead to future success on both Football and Hurling playing fields.
That we drive on our House Draw to ensure the project that is Pairc Tailteann will be a success and that the changes finally made to our Adult Competition structures under my tenure will help achieve the goals that we strive for.
I will be making no further comment in relation to this matter.
