Oldcastle and Dunsany stay on course for glory
It's onwards and upwards as far as Oldcastle are concerned in the IFC after they defeated Dunderry 2-12 to 2-7 in the IFC quarter-final at sun-splashed Ballinlough today while in the JFC at Kilmainham Dunsany got the better of Gaeil Colmcille 2-11 to 0-10.
The Ballinough club have spent a great deal of time and money on improving their facilities in recent years and they had their ground in tip-top shape for this entertaining encounter. Kilmainham also looked superb for their game with plenty of stewards out and about. This was a real rip-roaring encounter with the contest flowing one way then the other before Oldcastle emerged with their win.
Oldcastle led most of the way including the break when they were 2-8 to 0-2 in front with the help of goals from Colin Hawdon and Rory McHugh. However in the second-half Dunderry came back strongly and they grabbed two goals of their own, both scored by Conor Farrell including a penalty. Farrell also hit a second penalty late on against the post in a series of let offs for Oldcastle.
Robert Farrelly was Oldcastle's top marksman with four points, three frees the same amount Paddy Kenneally hit for Dunderry with four points. Farrell had a mixed day as he was sent off just before the end.
In the JFC at Kilmainham Dunsany built on a powerful first-half display to get the better of Gaeil Colmcille 2-11 to 0-10 at Kilmainham today. Cathal Murphy and Charlie O'Donnell, with a spectacular volley, netted for Dunsany.
