Meath Sports Awards - Na Fianna honoured for remarkable year
Topping our readers' poll to claim the Team of the Year award Na Fianna Camogie Club will be out in force at Knightsbrook Hotel Trim on Friday night to pick up their accolade
After a year in which so many teams in Meath went way beyond their expectations it was the outstanding and stunning display of the Na Fianna camogie team that ensured their won the Team of the Year accolade.
After pushing Kilmessan close in the previous three finals Na Fianna made it fourth time lucky and finally managed to get over the line and prevent the all-conquering All-Ireland Junior champions from making it 11 Meath Senior Camogie Championship titles in succession with a 0-11 to 1-6 victory in Trim in October.
Na Fianna appeared in their first Meath Senior Camogie final in 2016 where they lost by six points (2-9 to 0-9) to Kilmessan. They also lost to Kilmessan in 2017 and 2018, both finals by four points, but in October they finally reached the promised land as they recovered from a 0-4 to 1-4 interval deficit to stun the All-Ireland champions.
To hold Kilmessan to just two points in the second-half was a remarkable achievement as points from Erin Reddy, Emma Regan and Sophie Healy edged the winners ahead and they stayed their to claim their first Meath senior Camogie crown at the fourth time of asking.
