McEnery goal boosts Simonstown to victory

Simonstown Gaels got 2020 off to a winning start tonight with a thoroughly deserved 1-11 to 0-9 Feis Cup
first round victory against Summerhill

This was a good game with plenty of open football as the players and the referee adapted to the new rules without any problems.

The teams were level four times in the opening half as Simonstown edged into a 0-6 to 0-5 interval advantage, but the Navan men upped the tempo sufficiently after the break to merit victory.

However, they can be thankful that goalkeeper Robbie Burlingham was in good form as he made a couple of impressive saves in the opening half and was again active in the second-half.

ACTION FROM THE CLOSING MINUTES

Summerhill's inability to take the goal chances they created ultimately proved costly and they were punished when Simonstown Shane McEnery finished to the net at the three-quarter stage for what was the crucial score of the hour.

That gave Simonstown a 1-8 to 0-7 lead and they were comfortable for the remainder.

There were two other Feis Cup games tonight with Gaeil Colmcille winning by 4-12 to 2-7 against Nobber after leading by 4-6 to 1-6 at the interval

It was closer in Curraha where the hosts were degded out by neighbours Skryne who won by 0-11 to 0-7.

Skryne were ahead by 0-5 to 0-2 at the break, but Curraha got it back parity at the three-quarter stage 0-6 each. However,Skryne found enough to get the win.

One result from the Corn na Boinne - Castletown defeated Bective by 0-13 to 0-8.
The Meath Hill v Syddan game scheduled for tonight will be played tomorrow in Syddan.
