Good night for Carnaross

Carnaross advanced to the last four of the Tailteann Cup with a well-deserved 1-10 to 0-6 win against Moynalty tonight.

The two unbeaten teams in Group D went head-to-head for a semi-final ticket and it hosts Carnaross who advanced with a strong performance.

A large crowd was treated to an excellent game in difficult underfoot conditions for both teams and the players also had to cope with a strong wind that backed Moynalty in the opening half.

Seven first-half wides was a costly statistic for a Tony Kearney-managed Moynalty side that trailed by 0-4 to 1-3 at  the interval.

Paul Lynch (two frees), Anthony Nevin and Padraig O'Connor were on the mark for Moynalty, but Carnaross hit a crucial goal at the end of the opening quarter.

Niall McDonnell will claim the goal, but his shot took a deflection off a Moynalty defender on the way to the net.

Cian O'Reilly, Frank O'Reilly (free) and Dillon Fox sent over the points for Benny Reddy's Carnaross.

A feature of the Carnaross tactics was a fierce determination to defend without conceding frees and they achieved that for the most part although they lost Peter Carpenter to a black card (1o minutes in the sin bin) early in the second-half.

Carnaross also required goalkeeper Shane McNiffe to rpoduce a smart save late in the game from Moynalty's Liam Brogan - it  was that type of a night for Moynalty when things didn't really go their way.

A paltry return on the scored in that second-half saw pointed frees from Paul Lynch and Brian McCormack, but they were well in the game until Brogan was denined that goal chance.

CLOSING MINUTES SECOND HALF

 

 

Frank O'Reilly added four second-half points for Carnaross with Shane O'Reilly, Cian O'Reilly and McDonnell also sending over.

A good night for Carnaross who can also boast one of the most impressive clubhouses in the county now also with a very impressive structure over-looking the pitch.

FEIS CUP GAMES 

Hosts Navan O'Mahonys pipped Skryne to a Feis Cup 'semi' spot with a narrow 1-8 to 1-7 win tonight. Midfielder David Dillon was the match-winner with a stoppage time point that edged the home side in front for the only time.

There was also a win for St Colmcille's when they got the better of Ratoath by 1-10 to 0-10.
