Death of former Chronicle sports editor, Tom Mooney

The death has occurred of Tom 'Tex' Mooney, a former sports editor of the Meath Chronicle.

The Skryne native passed away on Saturday at St Luke's Hospital, Dublin.

He lived in Carlow and moved on from the Chronicle to work with the Carlow Nationalist, and subsequently with national titles.

He spent a decade as sports editor in Market Square from 1977, revolutionising the coverage of sports, and introducing many reporters who went on to be nationally known. He had himself won a junior championship with Skryne in 1967.

Son of the late Tommy Mooney, a major figure in Skryne and Meath GAA, and his wife, Bernadette, Tom was also predeceased by his brother, Raymond, a teacher at St Patrick's Classical School, Navan.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, family, Tommy, Peter and Douglas, brother Gabriel (USA), daughters-in-law Fran and Laura, grandchildren Zazie, Noah, Áine and Erin, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

His funeral Mass can be viewed on the Carlow Cathedral Parish website (www.carlowcathedral.ie/webcam/) on Tuesday morning at 10am after which Tom will be laid to rest in Rathfeigh, Tara.
