'It was such an honour to play my song at Amy's funeral'

The heartbroken friend of a young Navan woman who tragically lost her life in a car accident earlier this year has written a song in memory of his “amazing best friend.”

Amy English (21) and Conor McColgan (23) were killed when the car they were travelling in on the Slane to Navan Road collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction on the N51 in June.

As a way of coping with his loss in the days leading up to her funeral singer/songwriter Adam Grimes (21) put pen to paper and wrote “Free to Fly” a heartfelt song describing his life long friendship with Amy who he grew up beside,he in Tara Court and Amy round the corner in the square.

Talking about what inspired him to write the track he said:

“It’s basically trying to sum up our years of friendship because she wasn’t just a best friend she was a neighbour as well she only lived around the corner from me.

“The morning of the wake about 5.30am to be precise, I was wide awake in bed unable to sleep, and i felt inspired to put my feelings down on paper".

“I started writing a song, I had one verse down and then the rest gradually came together".

“I texted her dad and said I had written a song for Amy and would love to play it for them when the time was right and he replied and asked would i come over and play it for her tomorrow at the wake".

“It was a huge honour to be asked to do that and it was an unbelievably tough but equally amazing way for me to pay my respects to Amy and her amazing family too".

“Amy's family instantly requested if I would play it at the funeral in Mt Jerome the next day as a final tribute to Amy. It was and still is something that I will never forget. It will stick with me for life”.

Speaking about his childhood friend Adam said:

“She was just amazing, she was always there to talk to, her door was always open, there was never any judgement, she was always there for every single one of her friends.

“The two of us were in different primary schools, she was in Scoil Naomh Eoin and I was in St Olivers but yet we’d come home from school and hang out and play around the estate".

“We both went our separate ways as I say in the song with regards to secondary schools, Amy went to Loreto and I went to St Pats but we still used to walk down to school every day together and meet up on our way home".

“We both ended up moving schools around the same time and ended up going to Dunshaughlin(DCC) and we repeated 5th year together and then went on to sit our Leaving Certificate together . We were separated for that many years,to then be able to finish our two years in secondary school together, it was like it was meant to be,and the memories will live on".

“It means so much being able to do this for Amy and even dealing with it myself, writing a song and getting my feelings down on paper, it was a great way of expressing my emotions while also remembering Amy in the process".

“And to help the family in the way it did as well, is something that will stay with them forever and they can listen to it along with her many other great friends on all streaming platforms and her memory can live on in the song, that’s more than I could have ever wanted.”
