Bohermeen pupils' coppers collection raises €1,500 for St. Vincent de Paul
Students of St Ultan's School in Bohermeen remembered the less well off this Christmas by raising €1,500 for the local St. Vincent de Paul through a brown coin collection. The children wanted to raise money for the charity in the lead up to Christmas and set a target of €150, when they started in November.
They quickly realised that they would far exceed their target, as week in-week out, children from all classes in the school continued to bring in bag after bag of brown coins. The campaign was headed by the 6th Class children who made posters; promoted the collection throughout the school over a number of weeks; collected, counted and bagged all the money.
On Friday, a cheque for an incredible €1,500 was presented by the children of 6th Class to Liam Brady who was representing the local St Vincent de Paul.
"The school has been overwhelmed by the generosity of families, friends and the wider community in supporting our Brown Coin Collection," ‘said 6th class teacher Ms Gilroy.
Joe Leahy of Newgate Mace, who had a collection box in his store, also greatly contributed to the collection.
"We could never have dreamed of raising this amount of money and could not have achieved it without everyone’s support. We hope this will go some way towards allowing the local SVP continue their amazing work in helping families in the community who are less fortunate than us," said Ms Gilroy. "The spirit of giving is definitely alive and well in Bohermeen."
