Snow warning issued by Met Éireann
Met Éireann have issued a weather warning that further falls of snow in places today (Wednesday) and tonight will lead to accumulations in some areas. The Irish Meteorological Service say cold weather is on the way in the coming days.
It will be very cold today with scattered wintry showers, especially in northwestern and western coastal counties, but with good sunny spells developing for the afternoon. Highest temperatures of just 2 or 3 degrees, slightly higher in western coastal areas, in a light northwesterly or variable breeze.
Tonight will be very cold with frost or ice. Showers, some wintry, will continue to feed into northern and western coastal counties with clear spells elsewhere. Showers becoming more frequent towards dawn in the north and northwest with some falls of sleet or snow. Lowest temperatures of -2 to 0 degrees with a moderate northwest breeze, freshening on coasts towards dawn.
Tomorrow, New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31, will be breezy with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, some turning wintry in places. There is a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms. Showers will become more frequent in the afternoon, especially along eastern coasts. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees but feeling colder in fresh and gusty northerly winds.
Friday (New Year's Day) will be a dry, bright day for many areas with scattered showers affecting coastal counties, especially to the north and northwest. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with light to moderate northerly winds.
The Irish Meteorological Service say that the overview is that it will be cold for the rest of the week with frost or ice at night. Showery conditions mixed with a lot of dry and bright weather.
