A Status Yellow - Low Temperature/Ice warning remains in place for Ireland

this morning. The alert by Met Éireann is valid until 11am today.

The national weather forecaster says it will be cold with minimum temperatures of zero to minus 4 degrees with ice forming on untreated surfaces.

Widespread frost and ice to begin the day. Overall it will be dry with bright winter sunshine, however well scattered wintry showers will occur. Highs of only one to three or four degrees Celsius at best. Northerly winds will be mostly light to moderate in strength. A severe frost will set in quickly after dark.

Tonight will be extremely cold with widespread frost and ice. Dry, calm and clear in many areas. Temperatures will plummet to between -2 and -7 degrees Celsius, with fog forming in some areas.

It will be extremely frosty and icy on Saturday morning with some freezing fog in parts too. Cloud will increase with patchy rain and drizzle gradually moving into the north and northwest. Other areas will stay dry with some sunny spells, in just light westerly breezes. Highest temperatures of only 0 to 4 degrees Celsius, a little less cold though across west and northwest fringes.

A return to more near normal temperatures is expected next week but conditions will become more unsettled.

Patchy drizzle will affect parts of the north and west on Saturday night, but otherwise it will be dry under broken cloud. Minimum temperatures -3 to +2 degrees Celsius, coldest under clearest skies where frost and possible ice will set in. Some mist and fog patches too in just light westerly breezes.

Many areas will be dry on Sunday with a mix of cloud and some sunny spells, and just light southwesterly breezes. However, patchy drizzle will cotinine to affect northern and western counties. Maximum temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, best values closer to the Atlantic. Rather cloudy overnight with further patchy drizzle across the west and north, whilst holding mostly dry elsewhere. Some frost is possible. Minimum temperatures of one to five degrees Celsius, in moderate southwest breezes.

Looking ahead to Monday and it's promised to be cloudy and breezy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Maximum afternoon temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees Celsius, in fresh and gusty southwesterly winds. Scattered outbreaks of rain will persist overnight, turning heavy and persistent in places later. Minimum temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius, in fresh southwest winds.

Tuesday is set to be wet and blustery with heavy falls of rain leading to spot flooding, in mostly fresh southwest winds. Outbreaks of rain will persist after dark with blustery winds for a time too. The rain may turn wintry for a time in the north.
