Navan RFC volunteer profile - Gerry Sweeney
Navan RFC u16 boys head coach and Blue Dragons inclusive tag rugby team head coach Gerry Sweeny was this week put under the volunteer spotlight and he answered some probing questions.
How did you get involved in the club?
Back in 2012 my school friend Robert Hoban was playing with the J3s and asked if I’d like to come along.
Myles McCarthy whom I’ve known for over 20 years was team manager at that time.
A great bunch of lads with whom I enjoyed my best and worst days on a rugby pitch.
Best rugby memory:
I have had many memorable moments during my time at Navan RFC.
My best rugby memory would have to be watching the Blue Dragons Inclusive Tag Ruby play in the Aviva Stadium in front of 50,000 people during half-time at the Leinster Rugby European Cup.
I even got to ref their game!
To see the joy on their faces, to hear the roar of appreciation and applause from the crowd was really wonderful.
A truly amazing moment for the Blue Dragons and their families.
Favourite thing about Navan RFC:
My favorite thing about Navan RFC is that we have managed to adopt a true community ethos over the years.
EVERYONE is made to feel welcome and EVERYONE in our community has a place in Navan RFC.
Player you most admire:
The player I admire the most would have to be former Ireland international Paul O'Connell.
When he was a player he inspired not just those on his team around him with his leadership, workrate - but also young rugby players to be the best they can be and give 100 per cent every time they pulled on the jersey.
Be that for Ireland or their club..
