4,000 take part in Aldi Community Games virtual events

4,000 children from all over Ireland took part in the Aldi Community Games Virtual Events this year. A new Aldi Community Games platform was launched in March 2021 so that parents could register their children for fun and varied Community Games events – Art, Handwriting, Model-making, Dance, Singing, Music and Recitation in several different age groups.

The event was a great opportunity to reach children of all abilities and was aimed at boys and girls aged between six and 16 years. At a time when activities were restricted across Ireland, this new platform offered direct access to enter locally judged area-run events. Judges then selected the county qualifiers and national judges then selected the national medal winners.

Aldi Community Games showcased all the winning entries on their Facebook page on 26th and 27th June reaching an audience of over 200,000 people so far. In total 130 medals will be sent out to the National winners. Additionally, every child who entered will receive a digital certificate by email.

John Curtin, Group Buying Director at Aldi Ireland said: “It is great to see that the virtual events for Aldi Community Games have been such a success this year. We’ve been sponsoring Aldi Community Games now for five years, and it’s all down to the team on the ground that these events have proven so popular and are still providing as much fun and support for local communities throughout the global pandemic. Well done to everyone that has taken part!”

Eleanor Farrell of Bus Éireann said: "Bus Éireann is at the heart of communities throughout the country. We are proud to be Aldi’s Community Games official travel partner for the second year and to see so many local communities showing their support for the Games. The events highlight the remarkable talents of over 4,000 children in communities across Ireland who participated this year.”

Gerry McGuinness, Community Games president commented: “We were delighted with the success of our Virtual Events this year and it was fantastic to see children from all over Ireland take part. The talent, dedication and energy shone through in the children’s entries. We will soon be announcing a return to our traditional outdoor events and National Festivals later in the year and we can’t wait to get going again!”
