Cyclists make their way across the Boyne at Kilcarn Bridge.

Get on your bikes and ride!

Locals in the Johnstown and Athlumney areas of Navan were treated to the unexpected sight of over a hundred people cycling around Navan last week as part of the Navan Cycling Initiative’s Family Cycle event.

This was the second family cycle event to be held in Navan, with a growing number of participants of all ages and levels of experience in attendance.

The event was a leisurely spin around the quiet Sunday morning roads of Navan including a crossing of the Boyne by the historic Old Kilcarn bridge.

Cllr Yemi Adenuga demonstrated her support by not only cycling the route but bringing along her family too.

The organisers, Navan Cycling Initiative, were encouraged by the growing participation and the diverse group of boys and girls, men and women, from age six to sixty six and beyond.

Chairperson Kevin Corrigan said “It was great to see such a fantastic turnout for the event, which really shows how fast interest in cycling is growing. The past year has shown us that residents of all ages expect to be able to use their bike to get to school or work, to shop or go to the gym, and this needs a safe and integrated cycle network”

The group would like to thank all the participants for their energy and enthusiasm, the volunteers who helped with the event, the IDA and Meath County Council for use of the Buvinda House car park, Civil Defence for first aid support and Cycle-Garda Scully for traffic management.

A family cycle event is planned during National Bike Week 12-18th September.
