Kentstown Rovers - a family club in more ways than one
This week, and probably for much longer, those involved with Kentstown Rovers will be savouring the fact that they are the new holders of the NEFL Challenge Cup.
Last Saturday night at the MDL Rovers won the trophy for the third time in their history defeating Chord Celitc 3-2 with two goals from James Lynch and one from Paul McDonnell.
However, a major part of their success was undoubtedly down to the fact that the first-team squad is made up of not one, not two but FOUR sets of brothers.
There are the Walsh brothers for starters - Ross, Colin, Keith and Daire. Then there are the Lynch brothers - Colin and Andy.
Then what about the Bowens brothers, David and Derek and last, but certainly not least, is the Corcorans, Daire and Cillien.
They too made huge contributions to ensure the famous trophy ended up in Kentstown on a night to remember for all those involved with the Rovers.
Another remarkable fact - as pointed out by proud club vice-chairman Neil Cunningham - is that at one time during the cup final a hefty contingent of the brothers were on the pitch at the same time.
"At one point during the second half of the final, out of the 11 Kentstown players on the pitch, there was four sets of brothers," the vice-chairman added.
"Incredible," he added, and indeed it is. No doubt the strong family bond helped Kentstown achieve a victory that will be long savoured by the Meath club.
