Reilly highlights urgent need for pedestrian crossings at Round O
The need for pedestrian crossings close to the Round O in Navan has been highlighted by Cllr Tommy Reilly who has warned that the area is extremely dangerous.
“Even driving, you need your wits about you, going through the roundabout. It is lethal for pedestrians as the traffic is so busy there, cars are taking whatever they chance they get.”
Cllr Reilly said there was a great need for a number of new pedestrian crossings in Navan including on the roads adjacent to the Round O and at Abbey Road.
“There also needs to be much great consideration of the needs of those with disabilities,” he said.
“There are many places in Navan, where it is extremely difficult for anybody crossing the road, but someone who is visually impaired or with mobility issues would find it impossible
“It is chaotic at the Round O. Pedestrians are taking their lives in their hands trying to get across any of the roads.
“We really need some type of crossing put in as soon as possible.
“It is busy, the cars are trying to beat each other at the junction and if you aren't able to just run across the road, you are in trouble,.
“The provision of pedestrian crossings there cannot wait,” he warned.
He acknowledged that the council was concerned at road closures in the area during works in the town centre on Navan 2030 projects, but said,
“It is lethal, very, very dangerous.” Cllr Reilly said another spot that badly needed a pedestrian crossing was Abbey Road.
“It is a very busy spot with a bus stop, two doctors surgeries and a pharmacy in the area.”
Cllr Reilly said that throughout the town there are difficulties for people with disabilities.
“We need more emphasis on providing crossings and safety measures for people with disabilities, as it is extremely difficult to get around the town,” he said.
