Man arrested over fatal hit-and-run
38 year old arrested at Dublin Airport
A person has been arrested in connection with the fatal N3 hit-and-run that claimed the life of local man Frank Nulty.
Mr Nulty (57) died having suffered significant injuries when struck by a passing vehicle approaching three week ago, Thursday night, August 18.
Gardaí investigating the incident had been following a definite line of inquiry, and this evening arrested a 38-year-old male at Dublin Airport.
The Celt has learned the male currently being held for questioning at Bailieborough Garda Station.
He is being detained pursuant to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, and can be held for up to 24 hours.
The Anglo-Celt has learned the male had fled this jurisdiction in the wake of the Mr Nulty's tragic death.
However, in the past week gardaí were able to successfully find and seize the vehicle suspected of being involved in the accident.
The car was moved away from the Ballyjamesduff area where it is understood it was registered.
It had been moved outside of the jurisdiction, but was recovered towards the end of last week. It is now also in the hands of gardaí.
Gardaí confirmed in a statement issued this evening that a technical examination of the vehicle has now been "completed".
The Mazda 6, registration 151-G-6239, manufacturer identified ‘Deep Crystal Blue’ in colour, was considered essential in terms of evidential value.
Gardaí say the vehicle had sustained damage to the left front headlight, front bumper, left front passenger wing, and windscreen. It also has a missing wing mirror on the passenger side.
The place where Mr Nulty was struck, at Billis Bridge, is just minutes from the deceased's home at Drumformina, New Inns, Ballyjamesduff.
He had, minutes earlier, alighted a bus from Virginia Town which dropped him off on the northbound side of the road, travelling in the direction of Cavan, at around 10pm on August 18.
The timeframe means the Kyte worker’s body may have been lying by the side of the road for close to 14 hours before being found by a passing cyclist shortly after midday on Friday, August 19.
Mr Nulty was pronounced dead by emergency services personnel at the scene.
A post-mortem was conducted at Cavan General Hospital, the results of which gardaí have not released for “operational reasons”.
Forensic Collision Investigators determined he had been struck by a vehicle, which subsequently failed to remain at the scene.
"Investigations ongoing," said the garda spokesperson.
Mr Nulty was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining St Mary’s Church, Clonaphilip, his local church.
He is predeceased by his parents John and Agnes. Mr Nulty is survived by his sister Geraldine Pritchard, Mountain Lodge; brother Tommy, New York; niece Ashling; nephews Michael, Gavin and Kevin; grandnephews, grandnieces and extended family.
