Man impersonating garda targets elderly home owners
Gardaí in Cavan and Meath are seeking a man, pretending to be a garda, and who is targeting elderly people in their homes across both counties.
On Friday September 30, in the Ryefield area of Virginia, at around 12 midday, a lone male called to the home of an elderly person and impersonated a Garda. The person showed some form of makeshift Garda I.D. and produced a sum of cash, while enquiring if the elderly person owned the money.
Gardaí say the unidentified cold caller’s intention was to find out where the elderly person kept their cash. “Thankfully the injured party in question was wise to this scam and closed the front door.”
The same male has been linked to other incidents in the neighbouring Meath division.
In a Carnaross incident, the lady present became suspicious of the caller and activated a panic alarm. The male then immediately left the area in a navy coloured saloon type car.
In the Kilmessan area between 12pm and 1pm, the same male called to the home of an elderly woman claiming to have seen two youths running from the lady’s house with cash. The resident again became suspicious and did not open the door. The male then left.
