Broadcaster killed in hit-and-run was teacher in Navan
GAA broadcaster Paudie Palmer, who died on Sunday morning, 8th January, following a hit-and-run accident in Cork, was a former teacher in Beaufort College, Navan.
The 65 year-old died following an incident that occurred in Innishannon on Friday 30th December.
The Kerry native taught science at Beaufort College for a number of years in the 1970s and '80s before moving to Cork to teach. He played soccer and Gaelic football with Navan and Meath teachers.
A native of Templenoe in Kerry, Mr Palmer was a well-known GAA commentator who worked with C103 and worked as a teacher, spending most of his professional life at St Brogan’s College in Bandon.
He is survived by his wife, Colette; daughters, Claire and Emily; grandson, Lucas; brothers, Denis, John and Richie, extended family and many friends.
Mr Palmer is uncle and Godfather of Claudine Keane, model and wife of former Ireland soccer international, Robbie Keane.
Tánaiste and Cork TD, Micheál Martin, offered his sympathies to Mr Palmer’s family for their enormous loss which he said would also be felt in the wider sporting community across Cork and across the country.
Paudie's funeral took place this morning, Wednesday 11th January at St. Mary's Church, Innishannon with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
Ukrainian national Bohdan Bezverkhyi has appeared in court in relation to the incident. The charges against him include failing to offer assistance at the scene of a crash to the injured party, failing to report the occurrence, failing to keep his vehicle at the place of occurrence for a reasonable period and failing to stop his vehicle. He has been remanded in court until 19th January.
