Male arrested after Navan store worker assaulted

A male was arrested last night after a shocking assault that left a Navan store worker hospitalised with head injuries.

The incident happened last night (Sunday) at approximately 9.30pm, when youths began harassing the shop assistant in T Reilly's, Day Today store on Market Square throwing items around the shop.

It's understood that the man received kicks and blows to the back of the head when he he asked the youths to leave the shop which is located beside Metges Lane.

A shop front window was shattered in the incident and an ambulance called to take the injured worker to hospital where he was undergoing treatment this morning (Monday).

An eye witness told the Meath Chronicle that three youths, two males and a female, had been loitering on Market Square for hours before the incident.

"What can you do, it's happening all the time. The Gardai came quickly enough after it happened and they do their best but what will happen to them? They'll be out again soon enough."

He said staff in the shop suffered frequent harassment and anti-social behaviour but felt there was little they could do to stop it.

Gardai confirmed that they are investigating the incident and that one male was arrested.
