Power outages and school closures following snowfall

Many parts of the county woke to a blanket of snow this morning while several schools have taken the decision to close.

Several parts of the county experienced power outages including Athboy, Kells, Summerhill and Ashbourne with crews still working to restore power in some areas.

A tree was down this morning blocking the Navan to Kingscourt Road close to Gyproc but has since been cleared.

A tree was down at Line Road, Kilmainhamwood last night, while trees were also reported blocking roads in Rathfeigh and Dunsany.

Heavy snowfall was experienced in Kingscourt with some roads impassable for a time last night.

Navan escaped the worst of the snow all schools in the town opened as usual this morning.

A nationwide Status Yellow Ice Warning is in place until midday with widespread frost and icy surfaces and motorists are urged to take care.

A spokesperson for Meath County Council said gritting crews did a double run last night with snow ploughs attached and ploughed as they gritted.

Levels of snow varied across the county with greater levels in the west and on higher ground.

With very low temperatures expected tonight (-5oC) Meath County Council is likely to do a double run tonight also and motorists are advised to drive with extreme care.
