Game, set and matches for Trim tennis teams
Eoin Naughton
Recently there was an historic day for Trim Tennis Club as they claimed two titles in the Dublin Lawn Tennis Council Winter League, making them the most successful men's teams on finals day.
The finals were held in Lansdowne tennis club, with Trim claiming a quarter of all the men's trophies on the day, winning both the Class 5 and Class 8 categories.
Trim 2 beat Trackside 1 3-0 for the Class 5 title. The team was captained by former Trim hurling star Brian Carley, who was partnered with Kildalkey hurling captain Gary Kelly. The two hurling men made short work of their opponents winning 6-3 6-1.
Big serving Nigel Walker (Summerhill) and Micheal Priest (Athboy) also had an impressive 6-4 7-5 win. Two Trim players Robert Tully and Rory Doyle finished the rout with a 7-5 6-2 win.
In the other final, Trim 4 had a nail-biting 2-1 win over Glasnevin 5. Marc Fields (Scurlogstown) and Ronan Marmion (Trim) had a great 6-2 6-4 win. Unfortunately John Stafford and Philip Ryan came up against very tough opponents and lost 6-1 6-1.
This meant the tie came down to the final match with Colum Kavanagh, a former League of Ireland footballer, and Seamus Guy, a Boardsmill hurling legend, needing to deliver a win in order to secure the trophy.
They duly did so, much to the delight of the large group of travelling fans. The final score finished at 6-4 6-4.
