Athletes to again shine at Down Syndrome Cooley event
Tessa van Heerden
Glenmore AC together with Down Syndrome Louth Meath branch’s Warrior Wolves are delighted to host the second Athletics Come and Try Day for athletes with Down Syndrome on Sunday, May 21st.
In the shadow of the Cooley Mountains, home of Glenmore Athletic Club, the Bush Track has been the home for numerous disability events in the past.
The Come and Try Day will host athletes with Down Syndrome, young and old, from all over Ireland to come and show their ability.
This is also an ideal event for everybody getting back into physical activity, as the emphasis is on a fun day out in a friendly environment.
Babies in strollers, through to the most accomplished athletes with Down Syndrome, are invited to participate in age-appropriate athletic activities.
Sport plays a crucial part in the world population’s lives. It offers the same values, pleasures and satisfaction, to persons with Down syndrome. In addition, it is an invaluable means by which social, physical and psychological skills can be taught and learned.
Athletes with Down syndrome competing at any level not only provide role models for others, but also assist in breaking down the prejudice and ignorance which so badly restricts the lives of people with Down syndrome.
This event will create the platform on which players with Down syndrome can test their skills against their peers and form new relationships to strengthen the sport as a whole.
