Traffic volumes making the case for filter light at busy junction

Meath County Council is to investigate the provision of a filter light at the junction of the Commons road, Dan Shaw Road and Clogherboy in Navan.

The Mayor of Navan, Cllr Edward Fennessy called for the provision of a filter light at that junction at a meeting of Navan Municipal Council.

He was told a review would be carried out on the junction to determine if additional filter lanes which would be required to facilitate the provision of filter lights can be accommodated within the junction.

Cllr Fennessy said that traffic volume coupled with reckless driver behaviour had made the Commons Road junction unsafe.

"A number of minor accidents took place there over the past few years. All of them were caused by a confusion over who has the right of way. That confusion also contributes to congestion problems at the junction.

"Several constituents, particularly public transport workers, asked me to request the installation of filter lights. There's a consensus amongst everyone I spoke with that filter lights will improve traffic movement and make the junction much safer.

Meanwhile, Cllr Francis Deane called on the Council to erect bollards on the footpath outside of the Silverlawn Estate where motorists exit onto the Rathaldron Road, Navan side, as vision is obstructed due to cars parked on the corner of the roadside

He was told the junction has been assessed and a plan of works was in place for erecting flexi hi-visibility bollards on the town side of the junction to help with the sightlines for exiting the Silverlawn estate.

Cllr Deane also called on the council to make the pedestrian walkway at Ashling Place near Blackcastle Shopping Centre safe.

He was told the council will undertake an assessment of the area for pedestrian crossings, footpath conditions and the best use of available infrastructure in the locality. Part of the area is under the care of a management company.

Cllr Emer Tóibín called for improved safety measures to address the safety concerns of residents of Emmet Tce, including the option of one way vehicular traffic through the estate exiting from the Brews Hill side.

She was told the District Engineer would review this issue and will meet with the Resident Association to discuss their concerns.
