Whistlemount welcome for Navan Road Club cyclists

A 30-year tradition was maintained when Navan's Alzheimer Whistlemount Day Care Centre hosted their annual coffee morning for cyclists on Sunday 25th June.

This fundraiser organised by Larry Clarke of Navan Road Club gave cyclists the chance to socialise and make a donation to the worthy charity.

The main sponsor of this event was Brian Connaughton, winner of the 1969 Rás Tailtean.

Navan Cycling Initiative who were taking part in the event invited other cyclists to join them on the short, leisurely cycle to Whistlemount Centre on the Kells Road. They left Meath County Council Car Park, Railway Street, Navan at 10.30am and cycled the 3km distance to Whistlemount.

Upon arrival they were greeted with coffee, tea and plenty hospitality. The visitors were "impressed" by the high standard of the facility.

Christy Blake, Chair of the Navan Alzheimer's committee said: "We had 20 and 25 cyclists mostly from the Navan Cycling Club and the new Navan Cycling Initiative but we also had cyclists from Slane and Drogheda which made it very successful and we raised over 1300 euro."

Alzheimer's Whistlemount Day Care Centre care and meet the needs of people with dementia in a 'warm, welcoming and safe environment while providing support and stimulation.' The funds that were raised from this social cycle were greatly appreciated by the charity.

"We would like to thank Larry, all the participants and Brian Connaughton former winner of the Rás Tailtean in 1969 who sponsored the event."
