Camogie captain's plea for commonsense from Meath GAA
Meath Camogie captain Ellen Burke has called on Meath GAA officials to avoid fixture clashes on Sunday week, as her side get ready for one of the biggest games in Gaelic Games history for the county – an All-Ireland Intermediate Championship final at Croke Park (2.45pm) against Derry, writes Coilin Duffy.
As it stands there are three adult Hurling Championship fixtures fixed for times that would make it impossible for supporters and players to attend those games and head to Croke Park – including Burke’s own club St Peter’s Dunboyne who face Dunderry in the SHC at 2.15pm.
Kildalkey are due to face Ratoath in the SHC at 4pm; while Navan O’Mahonys and Gaeil Colmcille are pencilled in for an IHC clash at 1pm. There’s also JHC games fixed on Sunday morning for 11am.
Burke says that both male and female players have shown great support for each other over the years, and it would be disappointing that the hurlers would not be able to lend their support in person to the camogs, after they did likewise on the way to Christy Ring Cup success earlier this year.
“The Christy Ring success that the lads enjoyed was definitely inspiring this year, and we would have been able to get behind them and for that to be returned in favour, I think would be massive and it would speak volumes,” she told the Meath Chronicle.
“We've seen actually this week Waterford Ladies football have postponed all of their games (Waterford contest the Senior Camogie Final) and just the lift that gives players to show that yes, you're recognised by this whole county I think is massive. It would be something that should be considered and would greatly be appreciated.
“I'm sure the lads themselves across many of the codes, they have sisters, they have girlfriends who are involved with this team. So why would you take that opportunity away? It's not that often that we get here so we need every bit of support we can get.”
