Meath athlete, Liam Foley will take home gold for Ireland with his tremendous finish in the 1500m race at the Sport Union for Athletes with Down Syndrome European Championships.

Liam in green for Ireland proved that timing is everything when he paced himself throughout the Men's 1500m race, almost a lap distance away from the lead runner before bursting into life in the final lap and placing first.

His unexpected takeover was greeted with cheers and screams from the crowd.

As well as competing in the 1500m race, Liam also participated in the 100m and 800m races and a triathlon.

The triathlon consisted of 100m, long jump and shot put.

Liam was very proud to be representing his community and country, especially with this being his first international participation.

Liam has been taking part in road races for many years so track and field events such SUDS European Championships, are new and exciting for him.

His clubmates and coaches at Trim AC have been a great support system for Liam and shared their pride to their Facebook after Liam's big win:

"What a lesson in running through the finish line. Don't sit to close to the edge of your seat.
