The mighty 158 gram Cuckoo Maran egg.

Simply eggs-traordinary!

Drumree native Nick Molloy questions whether his hen has beat a record after laying an impressively large egg.

The egg which was laid last week weighs a whopping 158 grams, more than double the average egg weight for this specific type of hen, 62.5 grams.

Nick and his wife Isabella have two hens, one of which is laying eggs at the moment, on site of their home in Culmullen, Drumree.

Speckles, the Cuckoo Maran hen laid an egg which is 3.25 inches long, 2.25 inches wide and 158 grams in weight.

“We've never seen anything like this. Speckles would sometimes lay eggs larger than average but not more than double the average weight,” the surprised couple said.

“We wonder if this is some kind of record.”

Nick and Isabella have kept chickens continuously for the past 12 years. “For the past 12 years we've been buying the chickens from Aidan Maguire located on the Navan Racecourse road,” Nick said.

He added: “Before the summer we had five chickens but we got an unexpected visit from a fox which leaves us now with only two.”

“We intend to get three Road Island Red hens from Aidan soon following the incident during the summer.”

The married couple keep these hens purely as a hobby, not a business. “We don't even sell the eggs, we just keep some for ourselves and give the others to neighbours and friends.”
