Applications due in this Friday for new camogie manager

Challenge of taking Meath to next step awaits

The applications for the role of the new Meath camogie manager are due to close this Friday, 20th October, 5pm.

Interested persons can send your expression of interest to secretary.meath@camogie.ie by 5pm Friday the 20th October 2023.

The new manager will replace Brendan Skehan who recently stepped down from the role.

Skehan led to his team to three successive All-Ireland Intermediate semi-finals during his spell in charge but unfortunately for him and his players they were defeated each time.

This year Meath finally threw off their semi-final hoodoo when they defeated Westmeath 1-11 to 0-10 in Thurles but they subsequently lost out to Derry in the final.

The first game against Derry in Croke Park ended in a draw. It was a game in which the Royals showed tremendous tenacity. They trailed by eight points at one stage but fought back to level matters with Aoife Minogue sending over a late, late point to force a replay. The fight back was a sign of a team who believed.

In the replay, however, in Clones, Meath lost 1-9 to 1-17 and their chance to win the title was gone for another year.

Skehan, who gave tremendous commitment to the role, also led Meath to a Div 2A league final in April at Croke Park but once again victory eluded his team as Kerry won, 0-14 to 0-13.

Skehan and his management team had to rebuild the team this year after a number of players left the camp at the end of the 2022 campaign.

The rebuilding job was carried out with vision and effectiveness but sadly for all concerned success in the national finals proved elusive.

The new manager may well be able to take things a step further; the foundations for future success are certainly in place.
